Donner Summit, October 2008
.
Sitting at the actual snow level when Donner Party was stranded in October 1846

After reading both The Courage of Sarah Noble and Patty Reed's Doll we culminated the pioneer life unit with a great field trip to Donner Summit.  Unlike the Donner party, we had beautiful weather.  It was that week in history that the Donner party encountered about 5 ft. of snow making the passage on to Sacramento impossible.
Patty Reed's Doll tastefully tells the story of this tragic pioneer ordeal.  We were able to see the area in which the Reed family spent that fateful winter.  We touched the rock which served as a wall for one of the cabins.
Here is the doll, spoon, and salt dish Patty Reed, part of the Donner Party, hid in her dress.  Having a great time with the scavenger hunt! Finding pioneer items! Fun!
The book we read came to life seeing the places, the doll, the little spoon and the salt dish which Patty had hidden in her dress to keep with her.
Boys in front of the conestoga wagon!  Nature walk--plants, sounds of nature, and the cabin.
We also had great fun climbing rocks, running an indian relay, and toasting marshmallows over a campfire.
The indian relay--kicking a rock. Fun! We can roast marshmallow without burning them up - - - sort of!?

Girls can roast marshmallows too!   Yummy!

Mrs. Kramer looks at the famous rock, part of the wall of Murphy's cabin. The great outdoors. Makes us feel better!
